London to Brazil
Removals from London to Brazil
The shipping on this route is routine. The paperwork is not, and it is the part that sets the timetable. Brazil asks for more, checks it more carefully, and is considerably less forgiving of a vague inventory than most destinations.
On this corridor the inventory is not administration. It is the thing the whole clearance turns on.
Who moves this way from London
- People relocating to São Paulo for work, most often in finance, energy, agribusiness or professional services.
- Families moving to Rio de Janeiro, frequently on a fixed-term posting.
- Returning Brazilian households bringing a UK home back, which has its own document set.
How the goods travel
By sea in a container to Santos, Rio de Janeiro or another Brazilian port, or by air for a small urgent consignment. There is no road option and the clearance is where the planning goes.
From Santos, São Paulo is a short inland leg on a busy corridor. Rio is served directly. Onward delivery to Belo Horizonte, Brasília or the south is by road over substantial distances, planned as part of the movement.
Where we deliver
Customs, and who obtains what
Brazil grants relief on used household effects for a person taking up residence, claimed against a detailed and specific inventory alongside a substantial document set. Descriptions must be genuinely particular — a generic list is the commonest cause of a shipment being held — and several of the documents have to be obtained before the container sails rather than after.
The file, split in two
| Document | Obtained by | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Detailed valued inventory in Portuguese | Us | Genuinely specific, item by item. A generic list is the commonest cause of a hold. |
| CPF (tax identification number) | You | Required for the clearance and for almost everything else in Brazil. Start it early. |
| RNE or residence documentation | You | The registration evidencing your residence status. |
| Consular documentation where required | You | Obtained through the Brazilian consular route before the container sails, not after. |
| Proof of the Brazilian address | You | Lease or purchase documentation in your name. |
| Export and import entries | Us | Lodged by us or our appointed agent against the inventory. |
Rows marked You are attached to you as a person and take real time to obtain — start them before anybody books a sailing. Rows marked Us are built here from the inventory taken at the survey.
Why the file comes before the sailing
On most routes the inventory is administration and the shipping is the event. Here it is the other way round. Brazilian clearance depends on a document set that has to be substantially complete before the container leaves, and several parts of it come through a consular route that cannot be hurried.
Which means the useful sequence is: start the documents, then book the shipping around them. A container that sails ahead of its paperwork arrives and waits, and waiting at a Brazilian port is expensive in a way that no removals quotation absorbs.
The inventory itself has to be specific. Not four boxes of kitchen items — the actual contents, described. It is slower to produce at your house and it is the single thing most likely to keep the shipment moving at the other end.
Then the buildings. São Paulo and Rio are apartment cities with building management, service lifts and booked delivery windows, and in Rio the districts above the beaches are steep with narrow approaches that decide the vehicle. Both are established in advance by photographs.
And the employer question, since most moves on this route are employer-paid: check whether the package covers demurrage and storage at the receiving end. On a corridor where paperwork sets the pace, that exclusion is the one most likely to bite. Nothing here is immigration, tax or legal advice.

Questions on this route
- 01
Why does the paperwork set the timetable?
Because Brazilian clearance depends on a document set that must be substantially complete before the container sails, and parts of it come through a consular route that cannot be hurried.
- 02
How detailed does the inventory need to be?
Genuinely specific, item by item. Not four boxes of kitchen items but the actual contents described. A generic list is the commonest cause of a shipment being held.
- 03
What should we start first?
The CPF and the residence documentation, before you think about sailing dates. A container that arrives ahead of its paperwork waits, and waiting at a Brazilian port is expensive.
- 04
Does our employer's package cover the waiting?
Check specifically. Demurrage and storage at the receiving end are common exclusions, and on this corridor that is the exclusion most likely to bite.
- 05
What is access like in Rio?
Steep in the districts above the beaches, with narrow approaches that decide the vehicle, and older buildings with small lifts. Established in advance by photographs rather than on the day.
- 06
Do you advise on visas or tax?
No. Nothing here is immigration, tax or legal advice. Those belong with your employer's advisers or your own.
Moving from London to Brazil?
Both addresses, roughly what is going, and who is paying. If an employer is, send the policy or the purchase order reference with it.
